You will be able to state a preference for the days and times that you are able to volunteer with us, and we will always try to put you at your local library where possible. However, there are charges for printing and charges may be applied for other services. You will need your library membership card number and your PIN. Children’s computers can only be booked with a children’s card number. You must have an adult membership card to book an adult computer.

We want to reduce the digital divide within local communities which allows customers the opportunity to apply to borrow a Chromebook or a tablet from libraries for 12 weeks. Additionally, there will be the offer of digital skills training provided by libraries or Leicester Adult Education. The WiFi service indiancultureonline.com is free and easy to use and is available in all our libraries. Most personal devices are supported, including laptops, iPads, smartphones, and e-Readers. How to book

Some of our libraries offer free one-to-one help sessions and regular free sessions for beginners with our computer buddies. Just ask a member of the library team if you need help to access the wifi or when using our computers. You’re welcome to use your own flash drive, but if your device needs to install software or its own drivers it may not work on our computers. Library members can book a computer up to 7 days in advance using the ‘Book a Computer’ icon on any library computer desktop. Please refer to ourlist of libraries page to confirm that your local library is currently open and to check its opening hours.

We also have scanning facilities and printing available for a small charge of 20p per black and white A4 print and 65p per colour A4 print. As well as computers with free internet access, you can also find access to many online reference resources including Ancestry Library Edition. Many of these are available 24/7 from any device with an internet connection but there are some services that are only available on library computers because of licensing restrictions. It’s easy – you can book a 2-hr session in an activeIT centre up to a week in advance, either in person, by phone or 24/7 or online. If you’re not a library member, you can join on the spot, subject to evidence of identity – ask for details. Library members can book computer sessions for up to three hours per session at the Library of Birmingham or up to two hours per session at community libraries.

All of our libraries have public computers that you can access for free, and they have MS office software that you can use. You just log-on using your library membership number and your PIN number.
